Guided Meditation: Determination

Feb 21, 2023

“Determination or resolve is developed by clearly seeing and deeply understanding cause and effect. Understanding ‘when this arises, that arises.’ We observe our actions (of thought, speech and body) and we notice which actions lead to which results. When we’re impulsive, when we just want short-term relief or gratification, we may sacrifice our well-being or long-term goals. So determination is a clear seeing of where we’re headed and being resolved to stay the course: to take the action that leads to the long-term well-being of ourselves and others.”

This 20-minute guided practice with Heather Fenton includes mindfulness of breath in the body and a contemplation on the quality of determination or resolve. Determination (Adhitthana Parami) is listed eighth of ten ‘perfections’ of character that are developed on the Buddhist path of awakening. It is a steadfastness that is the foundation for the other nine qualities/perfections. For the 100 Days of Care program we follow the example of Thanissaro Bhikkhu in organizing the perfections beginning with Determination.
